True duals or not. This is the question.

Ah, is it more noble to put true duals on my late (post 2000 model) vehicle or "cat-back duals". Let's see if I can waylay some of the myths out their regarding true duals versus cat-back duals. First a little history.

True duals were mainly used on older pre OBDII (On Board Diagnostics).  As a rule ODBI was 1995 and ealier. OBDII is 1996 and newer. The difference is the oxygen sensor placement. On  OBDI vehicles the sensor was placed in front of the catalytic converter and/or in the manifold in some vehicles. With OBDII you will have oxygen sensors both in front of the catalytic converter and in the rear of the catalytic converter. This is an important difference in that the oxygen stream data being supplied to the ECM (Electronic Control Module) is being read both fore and aft of the catalytic converter and this data stream then determines the fuel/air ratio mixture being supplied to the injectors. Starting to see the picture now? You also have a compression ratio which the engineers by design, fit the exhaust system to a vehicle based on that specific engine design standard.  Any modification in the exhaust must be done carefully as not to increase by to much or to little the flow of exhaust. Too much flow can cause a loss of "bottom end performance" while to little exhaust flow can cause a restriction and decrease gas mileage. The key therefore is to find the right fit for each vehicle.

Putting "true duals", i.e. two exhaust pipes, two mufflers and two tail pipes from the manifolds back on late model OBDII gas engine vehicle is not such a good idea. Most true duals we have seen on late model vehicles have eliminated the catalytic converters and use oxygen sensor defeat devices that fool the ECM in thinking the converters are still in place. Are these vehicles actually benefiting (gaining horsepower and gas mileage)  from true duals and converter elimination? Short answer is not really. Why, because vehicles today are synergistic in the design. This means that all the hundreds of electronic sensors and computer processors function in tandem (when everything is working as designed) together to give you optimum performance by the engineers design. By defeating any of these devices you will reduce your overall performance gains and may actually cause damage to some other component in the engine management system. What to do?

For the best dual systems, we have been building "cat-back" systems for many, many years now. Cat-back offers benefits over true duals. The first and most obvious.  If you tamper with your emission control devices (converters/oxygen sensors) on new model vehicles with warranties, you will no longer have a warranty.  Also on cat-back systems we only eliminate the muffler and use a single-in dual-out design muffler, two tail pipes and chrome tips for a complete package. We have noticed utilizing this design that we keep the vehicle within the compression margin as required by the engineers yet relieve enough back pressure that we can have substantial performance gains in both bottom-end performance and gas mileage increases. For further proof look to Magnaflow.com.  Magnaflow is the hands down leader in cat-back performance exhaust. The are the only company I know of that actually uses a dynamometer to test each exhaust system on the vehicle before it is sold.

Everyone wants to increase their gas mileage and performance. Just be careful don't think of the way duals used to be, think about how duals can benefit you now.
